Practicing Safe Sport

As Canadians, we endure cold and often long winters, waiting for months for the warm weather to finally peak its head out. Although we have an abundance of great indoor facilities here in the Nation’s Capital, there really is nothing like being able to play the sports we love in the fresh, open air.

With the warmer temperatures there are environmental factors that we must consider when practicing, training and being active. Below you will find some tips on how to stay safe while soaking up that great weather!

High UV Rays

We spend many months with less sunshine than other parts of the world, which can take a toll on both mental and physical health. It’s no surprise then, that as soon as the warm temps hit – we take full advantage of being outdoors. Just ensure that you wear a high SPF Sunscreen and reapply when necessary. As an athlete, it is important to look for waterproof, as not only will water activities diminish the strength of the sunscreen, but sweat from being active will also be a factor. The sun is at its peak strength from 1pm to 4pm, but even early morning or late afternoon exposure can cause damage. Make sure to apply and re-apply regularly.

Heat Index

Yes, we love that heat, but the high temperatures and accompanying humidity can cause you to dehydrate faster than normal. You may be enjoying your game, run or cycle and not even notice that you need more fluids than usual. Make sure you are proactive and don’t wait until you feel thirsty to rehydrate.

Smog Warnings

In the City of Ottawa, we are very fortunate that our air quality is usually exceptional. It is not often that we have regular smog warnings, like many other cities that disable us from being outdoors. Still, make sure you check for any advisories on a regular basis and take your activity indoors if it is hazardous to be outside.

At the Ottawa Sport Council we are thrilled summer is finally here and wish you a wonderful, active season!
