Canada was Gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics

To say the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games captured attention around the world is by no means a stretch, but to say they captured the hearts of Canadians, is bang on! From the opening ceremonies on February 9th through to the closing ceremonies on the 25th, the games brought people together from all over the globe. In particular, Canadians felt an overwhelming sense of pride in how our country competed and represented itself on the world stage.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir

As the official Team Canada flag bearers and with a career that spans more than two decades, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir shined in PyeongChang. They became possibly the most talked-about performers and showcased their dedication and talent, bringing home the gold medal in the ice dance competition. The gold medals they brought home are symbols of their dominance, but more significantly of their relentless pursuit of perfection on and off the ice. Their final performance at the Gala brought tears to the eyes of many with a tribute to the Tragically Hip’s iconic front man, Gord Downie. Is there anything more Canadian?

Curling

The mixed doubles curling success of Canada’s John Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes may be contributing to a new spark in curling interest. Canada outscored its opponents 70-33 in their nine games, lost just once — to Norway on Day 1 — and demonstrated the country’s commitment to the sport of curling.

Skiing

Canada’s Kelsey Serwa and Brittany Phelan took home gold and silver in the women’s sk icross event at the 2018 Winter Olympics, in a competition that had many on their feet! Brady Leman won gold in the men’s ski cross, while fellow Canadian Kevin Drury finished in fourth and Dave Duncan, finished eighth overall. The alpine events are always popular with the winter games and this year, Canada didn’t disappoint.

With twenty-nine medals in total and many incredible athletes representing Canada, the 2018 Winter Olympic Games were a tremendous success. Whether you were an athlete, coach, or simply cheering from the sidelines or from home, once again – sport brought us all together.
