Staying Active in Cold Canadian Winters

It’s no secret that Canada is frigid during the long winter months. Our neighbours to the south (and other countries) have come to know us for our maple syrup, impeccable manners and of course our snow. All joking aside, our harsh weather sometimes makes it near impossible to stay active in cold Canadian winters, but here are some ways to continue to live a healthy and active lifestyle:

Join Winter Sports

If you’re willing to try winter sports, you are in luck! Ottawa has incredible trails for skiing, snowshoeing, biking and even winter running. We also have wonderful curling, skating, sledge and hockey arenas, as well as outdoor rinks for pleasure skating. If you dress for the climate and watch for ice or other obstacles, you can have a great time and keep active.

Take Your Favourite Sports Indoors

Being in a city such as Ottawa, with many active organizations and volunteers, we are fortunate to have indoor spaces in which to practice traditionally outdoor, summer sports. With various soccer domes, pools and gymnasiums – it’s easier then ever to scrimmage, join an indoor league and get out to blow off work stress at one of the many locations.

Buddy Up

Having a work colleague, close friend or family member is a great way to stay accountable and ensure you workout or play a sport – even on the coldest days. This will help motivate you and remind you of why you started. Another positive is that you will be a cheerleader for someone else too, which is incredibly rewarding.

Perspective

Something to remember is that winter is temporary. Joining something during this time helps you stay in shape for when the better weather eventually comes and then you aren’t spending half the season just trying to regain your footing. Above all – this is Canada and we are known for our resilience! This winter, get out there and enjoy!
