Learn how to take action and Apply Sport Safety in your Community Sport Organization with a webinar from the Coaching Association of Canada and the Ottawa Sport Council on Thursday, May 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At the heart of every great community sport experience is a safe, secure and smart environment. But how do we move beyond policy and codes of conduct and actually put safety into the culture of the organization?
Understanding Sport Safety
Sport Safety is the ability to understand the factors that contribute to physical, psychological, spiritual, and emotional health and well-being, in order to create quality sport environments at any level of sport participation. Quality sport environments promote safety through education and prevention and are free of abuse, harassment, discrimination, neglect.
During this informative and interactive webinar, we will expand on the Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM) – which applies to the whole sport organization including Board of Directors, administrators, staff, volunteers, leaders-in-training, coaches, parents and anyone involved in your sporting environment. The 3 elements of the RCM as per below:
Rule of Two The Rule of Two is a leading practice to ensure a safe sport environment for all. The goal of the Rule of Two is to ensure all interactions and communications are open, observable, and justifiable, and when two responsible adults (a coach, parent, or screened volunteer) are present with a participant.
Background Screening A secure sport environment is one where all coaches, volunteers and sport organization leaders are screened to meet requirements to be involved in sport. Screening includes comprehensive background and reference checks, interviews, plus police information checks, to be done at regular intervals.
Ethics Training A smart sport environment ensures coaches, volunteers and staff are trained and have the confidence and skills needed to effectively manage challenging situations. Lifelong learning through accessible learning modules such as NCCP Make Ethical Decisions, Commit To Kids, Respect in Sport, Mental Health in Sport, and NCCP Creating a Positive Sport Environment helps coaches, volunteers and staff expand their knowledge and awareness of important topics to ensure a culture of safety is applied.
We will also expand knowledge around the UCCMS – Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport and how this can be applied at the grassroots level of community sport as a vital tool for creating safe, smart and secure sport environments.
