PLAY Research Project for Partner Communities

Physical Literacy Assessment for Youth (PLAY) Research Project

The Physical Literacy Assessment for Youth (PLAY) Tools are meant to improve our population’s level of physical literacy. Directed at individuals aged seven and up, the PLAY Tools determine gaps in physical literacy development. In this project, the Centre for Healthy Development at Brock University and Canadian Sport for Life in partnership with Ontario community based organizations will utilize the PLAY tools to evaluate changes in physical literacy of children & youth in a variety of settings including sport, recreation and non ministry supported after school care over a one year period. As an outcome of the process, understanding will be enhanced about the use of PLAY to assess Physical Literacy and over 300 rec leaders, coaches and instructors will be trained to more effectively apply PLAY to support their communities into the future.

Training

Canadian Sport for Life has approached Kelly Robertson, Manager, City-wide Recreation Programs for the City of Ottawa to explore interest by recreation and sport service providers in participating in a research project to train front-line staff/program leaders in the assessment of physical literacy in recreation programs, non-Ministry supported afterschool programs, and, sport clubs. The ability to develop ‘Master Trainers’ is also a possibility.

The PLAY training session will be held some time between March and June, 2015 and we would like to invite you to participate.  The session will be approximately 4 hours in duration and will focus on utilizing the PLAY tools to assess the physical literacy status of children and youth – primarily between the ages of 7 and 13.  After completing the physical literacy assessment, you will be able to better identify what physical literacy level children are performing at.  Once trained you will be asked to utilize the PLAY tools in some of your programs over a 12 month period and work with a research team from Brock University.

More information on the PLAY tools can be accessed at http://play.physicalliteracy.ca/

If your organization is interested in participating in this project, please confirm with Kelly Robertson via e-mail at:  [email protected] and/or contact her at 613-580-2424, ext. 33319 by Thursday April 2, 2015.  Kelly is interested in identifying interested partner agencies, their contact person, and, will work with them to coordinate other details.
